If you haven’t heard by now, a new PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update will be released on April 1, 2010. With it comes nothing new as in added features. What this update will do though is disable a feature, the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models.
With this Update, it might be a good time for Sony to drop the tag line “IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING” because over the years they have removed a few features from the PS3 that some people care about. Sure they also add new features every so often but if they continue to remove things as well than they can’t be claiming it does Everything and could be setting themselves up for a lawsuit. They could change the tag line to “IT ONLY DOES LESS THAN IT DID!”, but don’t think they’ll sell many more consoles that way.
I personally didn’t use the “Install Other OS” feature but for Sony to take this away from those that did will sure piss a few off as you can see in the comments. Over 3000 comments now!
What else has been removed from the PS3 since its launch? Let’s see:
- Backwards compatibility for PS2 games
- Flash card reader
- 2 USB ports removed
- No SACD support
- and Now, No third party OS install
Did I miss anything?
The PS3 is still a good system to own and will only get better over the years (I hope) but it’s too bad they keep removing features that some if not all enjoyed having as well. What will be next on the chopping block?
Time will only tell!
